orange you glad for neocon 2011?

A hilarious article in the Chicago Sun-Times documented a notable trend at NeoCon 2011 (office furniture’s biggest conference mecca, for those not in the know): the prevalence of a very particular shade of orange. One company referred to it by its Pantone Matching System number, PMS-716. A little research reveals that there are several variations on this hue:

My curiosity got the better of me, so I went looking for office chairs (many of which we sell) in this shade. Is it arancio, persimmon, oriole, Koenig orange, sunrise orange, cayenne, mango, papaya, pumpkin, coral, brick, or just plain orange? See for yourself and be the judge.

sugachair

It’s hard not to love core77, one of the many superb design sites I peruse for the purpose of enriching this blog. Today they’ve provided me with a very sweet chair that I am now passing along to you, gentle readers. I present: the Sugachair.

cool chairs, interesting chairs, art chairs, unique chairs, contemporary chairs

Why is it called the Sugachair? Because it really is made out of suga, I mean sugar. Designed by mad hatter Pieter Brenner (pictured below), the chair is fully consumable. My question is, will Pieter be paying for the dentist bills if you decide to “customize” his chair?

cool chairs, chair designers, unique chairs

It’s only a prototype for now, on display at the Cologne International School of Design’s KISDshop. I like to try and imagine what would become of it should it go into some kind of mass production. Could it be made from organic cane sugar or is it a strictly high fructose deal? Would different factories around the world flavor it to match their cultures? Could there be a special candy cane edition in time for Christmas? The possibilities seem limitless…

suitcase chair

cool chairs, weird chairs, arty chairs

British designer Katie Thompson uses pieces of discarded junk to create her unique brand of recycled furniture, Recreate. Particularly wonderful are her chairs made out of old suitcases, like the one pictured above (which has been sold, alas). Katie also creates seating from hatboxes, buckets, and milk pails, and has a whole line of tables made from old crates!

risd spotlight: tanya aguiniga

As mentioned in a previous post, we like to bring our readers’ attention to the students and alumni of the Rhode Island School of Design, based in our hometown of Providence, Rhode Island. More accurately, we like to spotlight their work, which is often daring, frequently whimsical, and sometimes stunningly elegant.

One RISD/MFA Furniture alum, designer Tanya Aguiniga, has been making a splash lately with her cozy designs. She describes her work as “softening industrial impermanence” and specializes in felt or fabric-covered furniture, such as these awesome felt folding chairs.

We’re still looking for RISD students, past and present, to feature their chairs here on the blog! Drop us a line and we’ll share your work with our chair-obsessed readers.

One lonely chair

Photo hosting service Flickr has a wide variety of  “One” groups: places where you can see pictures of only one banana skin, or one bottle, or one seashell. Fortunately for us chair crazies, there’s also a One Chair group that specializes in singular photos of found chairs in unusual environments. I’m posting a few of my faves here, but be sure to click on the link and check them out for yourself!

White Desk Chairs

Here at seatingzone.com headquarters we frequently field requests from shoppers looking for unusual office chairs or hard to find office chairs but we also get inquiries that call for specific colors. Sometimes shoppers are more vested in the color than the actual functionality of the chair but of course we try to guide them to a product best suited for the tasks they are performing. But, that’s what we do here. We find products that people ask us for.

Frequently  at the top of the list are white desk chairs. White you ask? Yes, for they add life to most any space and they are true departures from the over indulgent black office chairs that just seem to be everywhere! These classic designs are in an easy to clean leatherette or leather surface so no worries about keeping them looking fresh and vibrant. Check them out! Most ship within 24-48 hours. They also work great in conference rooms.

BTW, the illustrated MDZ-1025 chairs sells for $238.99 delivered anywhere within the lower 48 states free. A deal indeed. This chair is also available in black, brick or mocha leatherette.

livin’ on the edge (of your seat)

We just added several new bungee chairs to SeatingZone.com that we’re particularly excited about.  Personally,  I’m enamored with the va-va-voom pink Fastrack 43205 Bungee Low Back Armless Task Chair:

Bungee chairs are particularly intriguing because they offer a subtle middle-ground for yield and support to your back, in a very no-frills manner.

For those who know a world beyond neon, the chair is also available in green, blue, and red.  If you’ve been on the eternal hunt for the LBC (little black chair: a standout that rises to all occasions), look no further.

Take a look at the Fastrack bungee chairs to see the similarities and differences between this chair and the management, executive, and high back styled chairs.  Let us know what you think, and if the spirit moves you to spring into one of these seats, be sure to leave a review and spread the love!

all seating, all the time.

Here at SeatingZone.com, we receive many requests for quotes and general questions from architectural firms, interior design firms, and facilities managers grappling with which of our higher-end, design-inclined seating options will best fit their projects.  More often than not, we sing the (very high) praises of All Seating and the Inertia line by Now Seating.

(Now Seating 79040 Upholstered Mid Back Task Chair)

Browse the lines, and you’ll notice the sculptural angles, punchy fabric/leather/mesh colors, and ergonomic features that wonderfully complement chic hotel suites, sharp conference rooms, and the comfort of those who inhabit such spaces.  We especially like the All Seating Fluid Task Chair (below) for its robust construction and wide array of ergonomic features.  With 100+ fabrics and 4 vibrant mesh back colors, mixing and matching to acheive  certain moods and tones will be a cinch.
